Warren Anderson

Warren Anderson (1921-present) was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Union Carbide Corporation at the time of the Bhopal Gas Disaster. After finding out about what had happened, Anderson flew to Bhopal on December 7, 1984 to see the devastation for himself.

Once Anderson arrived in Bhopal, he was arrested and charged with “culpable homicide.” After a phone call from a still unidentified caller, the Indian government released Anderson on $2,000 bond and his promise to return to the country for prosecution. Warren Anderson was formally charged with culpable homicide in 1991. Anderson has not returned to India since. The Indian government has declared him an “absconder from justice.”

The former CEO retired in 1986, two years after the tragedy. He has been in hiding since. The American government and Union Carbide have claimed to have no knowledge of Anderson's whereabouts. Greenpeace paid Anderson a visit in 2001 at his home in Bridgehampton, New York.

Following his outing, Warren Anderson has refused to comment about Bhopal. His wife, Lillian, insists that he has been unfairly treated.
