Political Effects
The politics of India have been affected along with every other facet of life since the gas tragedy. Numerous court cases have clogged the legal system. All of the court cases were finally settled in 2010, but the citizens of Bhopal remain unhappy. Originally, the Indian government placed the blame solely on Union Carbide Corporation and fought for compensation. Blame has since shifted. Political officials have received much criticism from people all over the world about the handling of compensation for the victims. Protests for the victims are a common occurrence. Citizens simply do not trust their government to take care of them or have their best interests at heart.
